Landscaping is a process of creativity that utilizes the beauty of nature with the principles of design and balance. The land is your canvas, and it is up to you to decide on how you want your masterpiece to look. It may not be an easy task, but the outcome of a well-maintained garden is always worth it.

If you’re willing to get your hands dirty, landscaping might just be the hobby for you!

Having a nature-inspired yard helps reduce the stress levels of its owners. Landscaping also encourages serious gardening, which aids in establishing an identity for one’s home and environment. This includes having a consistent design theme to ensure success from planning to execution.

Rule of (Green) Thumb

Before starting out, remember that research is crucial to landscaping, since a lot of the work will involve plants- who are sensitive to the climate. Their growth also depends on location. For example, there are numerous grass types available in the market, and not all of them are suited for Philippine weather.

  •   Zoysia Grass – Also known as lawn grass. Generally sought after.
  •   Axonopus Grass – Also known as carpet grass. Low maintenance, but vulnerable to pests.
  •   Carabao Grass – Soft and bushy. Suitable for our warm climate.
  •   Bermuda Grass – Sharp grass. Can withstand warm and cold weather.

In addition, the plants should also suit the needs of the property and the people living within the space. For instance, there might be plants that can cause allergies for kids and pets. If you are unsure of what to get, consult a professional.

Nurture with Nature

While preparing your yard means knowing what setup works for you, maintenance means keeping everything healthy and  pretty all year round. Basically, you will focus on grass height, pest control, and making sure that your garden flourishes via watering and fertilizer application.

Of course, landscaping is not just about gardens and natural beauty. With a bit of proper planning, you can use your construction knowledge to make your property even more beautiful. You can create flower beds and plan out pavement designs to improve the look and feel of your yard. If you are up for it, you can even try building retaining walls for flood control or soil support. If you have an excess bag of cement lying around, you can put it to good use and start beautifying your terrace.

Aside from aesthetics, you can further elevate your property by incorporating herbs, medicinal plants, vegetables and fruit bearing trees  to make your own “garden to table” experience.

It is extremely rewarding to see your ideas turn into reality. Landscaping is a beautiful avenue to showcase your passion for this art, and the best part is it doesn’t matter whether you are a professional or a newbie in the field.
